MEDIA RELEASE - A*STAR’S IMRE invents highly conductive material for 3D-Printing circuits
Scientists at A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) have invented a new type of thermoplastic thread that can be used in 3D printers to create functional circuits for use in electrical gadgets.

AWARDS - MTI Commendation Award
IMRE's Human Resource Partner, Ms Sherry Sim, received the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) Commendation Award at a award ceremony during the Firefly Symposium 2015. She was recognised for her excellent attitude in delivering exceptional service to A*STAR’s internal and external stakeholders and going the extra mile to help her colleagues.

AWARDS - T-Up Excellence Award 2015
Dr Guo Hong Chen, a scientist from IMRE, is one of the three T-Up Excellence Award Winners from A*STAR for 2015. He was recognised for "Chameleon", an apparatus he co-created with SOLVES Innovative Technology Pte Ltd (SOLVES).

AWARDS - IMRE celebrates four wins at the A*STAR Workplan Seminar 2015
For the third time, IMRE won the annual A*STAR's Patent Power Award, for having the highest number of patent applications filed per budget dollar. Dr Madhavan Nallani, Director of our spin-off company, ACM Biolabs, received the Scientist - Entrepreneur Award. Our staff, Mr Tan Khai Seng, was awarded the Go-the-Extra-Mile (GEM) Award for outstanding service to his colleagues. Another staff, Ms Chia Zuhaila, received the Star Innovation Award, for her part in developing electronic Purchase Request System (ePRS), which resulted in substantial cost savings for A*STAR.

ACHIEVEMENTS - IMRE and the National Junior College (NJC) signs Mou
IMRE signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NJC to continue the student-development programme for the next 3 years. IMRE and the National Junior College (NJC) have been collaborating since 2012 to encourage scientifically-inclined NJC students to take part in research attachments with IMRE.

MEDIA RELEASES - A*STAR’s IMRE Executive Director appointed to senior role at Hong Kong University
A*STAR congratulates Professor Andy Hor Tzi Sum, Executive Director (ED) of IMRE, on his appointment as Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Hong Kong University (HKU). He is expected to take up his new appointment on 1 September 2015. Prof Hor has been at the helm of A*STAR’s IMRE since June 2010.

MEDIA RELEASE - Longer and more accurate shelf-life with A*STAR 'smart' packaging material technologies
Nov 14 - IMRE signed an agreement with key industry partners to develop and test a new packaging material from IMRE for industry use. The newly developed packing plastic has a unique dual purpose high-barrier plate silicate sheet, which effectively blocks moisture and oxygen from seeping into the packaging.

Aug 14 - Dr Ramam Akkipeddi, an IMRE senior scientist, was awarded the SPRING Singapore Merit Award (SSMA) for his contributions to the standardisation programme at the Standards Partner Awards Ceremony 2014.

MEDIA RELEASE - Creating a layer of water for a clearer view
Jun 14 - IMRE scientists invented a new permanent surface coating, CleanClear, which prevents fogging on both glass and plastic surfaces by creating a layer of water. Using a new superhydrophilic coating technology, the durable and ceramic coating attracts water instead of repelling it, for a better, clearer view.

MEDIA RELEASE - A*STAR’S IMRE ties up with LION Corporation for more environmentally-friendly household products
May 14 - A*STAR scientists and LION Corporation are using a multi-purpose, highly customisable molecule and all natural material formulations to develop products that keep laundry smelling fresh and kill bacteria, without relying on chemical biocides that are found in some current household products.

AWARDS - Startup Asia Singapore 2014
Apr 14 - IMRE scientist Dr Shah Kwok Wei won the ‘Most Attractive for Investment’ and ‘Most Promising Idea’ awards at the Startup Asia Singapore 2014 for his work on M-Kool, a cooling pad that can be used in fabrics to help regulate body temperature and keep the wearer cool.

Mar 14 - IMRE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Engineering Research Centre for Colloidal Materials (NERC-CM) of Shandong University, China, and the Jinan New Materials Industrial Park (JNMIP), China during a jointly organised IMRE-Shandong University "Materials for New Business Opportunities" workshop.

Welcome to IMRE

The Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) is a research institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research  (A*STAR). The Institute has capabilities in materials analysis & characterisation, design & growth, patterning & fabrication, and synthesis & integration. IMRE also focuses on applications of materials through a number of speciality laboratories and programmes. These include consumer care technology, sensors & transducers, advanced energy storage, molecular materials, bioinspired materials, soft surfaces and interfaces, plasmonics and semiconductor heterostructures, advanced porous materials and nanocomposites. We house a range of state-of-the-art equipment for materials research including development, processing and characterisation. We collaborate actively with other research institutes, universities, public bodies, and a wide spectrum of industrial companies, both globally and locally. Our initiatives in various public-private consortia and an industry-themed prototyping foundry help promote the adoption of materials-based technologies by companies.
