Job Description

Brewster angle microscopy and reflectivity measurements will be assessed for use for sensing target molecules or macro / bio-molecules in a test medium. The system constructed to assess the technique is based upon pulsed as well as CW lasers enabling pump-probe techniques to be employed. This will allow us to investigate photochemically activated sensor layers or sensor layers with dual fluorescence and reflectivity changes. Monolayers on dielectric surfaces as well as on liquids will be assessed. This new technique will have wide applications in photochemical, imaging, bio-imaging and life sciences.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist with chemical synthesis and monolayer immobilisation. They will also be involved in instrumentation and instrument development. Full training will be provided as required depending on the candidate?s experience. You will be required to undergo extensive training in nanoimprint lithography techniques, such as step-and-repeat nanoimprint lithography and hot embossing. Training on various tools and equipment related to nanoimprinting, plasma etching and cleaning will also conducted.

Upon completion of training and acquiring sufficient experience, you will be expected to carry out standard nanoimprint lithography processes and fabricate high quality samples for various industrial projects and/or industrial orders.

You will be expected to assist in the development of new nanoimprint lithography processes, particularly those which involve pattern transfer from the imprinted resist to the substrate via plasma etching techniques.

Job Description

We are looking for a dynamic spectroscopist to join the following project: A novel means of axonal guidance imaged using optical microscopy and SPM.

The aim of this work is to use a range of optical and physical techniques to probe interactions of axonal cell membranes with surfaces during guided growth. The intent is to gain a fundamental molecular level insight into the growth process and the chemical parameters that control the growth, as well as examining the viability of the cells under a range of growth protocols. The work combines the efforts of the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB). The position is also responsible for developing and using imaging apparatus. The successful candidate will be using optical and AFM measurements to assess adhesion of stem cells to modified substrates.

Job Requirements

  • PhD degree.
  • Should preferably have experience in one or more of the following areas: Optical detection methods; Laser spectroscopy; Emission lifetime measurements; Forster Resonant Energy Transfer (FRET); ATR emission; Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM); Single molecule detection; Raman spectroscopy; Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM); Brewster angle microscopy or Ellipsometry.
